Title:
"Particle-in-Cloud-of-Points" (PICOP) Approach for Electrostatic and Hybrid Models
Abstract:
Adaptive meshless technique to solve partial differential equations is applied to kinetic models. A new Particle-In-Cloud-Of-Points (PICOP) algorithm, which solves the charged macro-particle equations of motion using a cloud (meshless structure) of computational points, is presented. The self-consistent electromagnetic or electrostatic fields are computed by solving either Maxwell's equations or Poisson's equation. The cloud of points is iteratively/dynamically adapted (number of points and their locations) to the field and the solution to resolve both solution singularities and complex boundaries. The adaptation is managed by a monitor function, which includes various aspects of the problem and still provides a freedom for a user to emphasize different properties. Many components of the algorithm are discussed: conservative charge redistribution; satisfaction of conservation laws including exact energy conservation; self-consistent determination of the field at a particle location; hierarchical point structure; fast point location search algorithm; noise reduction; advantages of an adaptive point generator; generalization of the algorithm to 3D. Numerical properties of the PICOP technique utilization for 2D electrostatic and 1D hybrid models are presented.
