Title:
Meeting Cyberinfrastructure Challenges in Multiscale Projects
Abstract:
Meeting the needs of science users with efficiency produces many challenges in the modern computing age. User communities are becoming accustomed to the availability of software of increasing sophistication, power and complexity for their routine daily lives, while resources to develop and integrate such software into large-scale high performance computing resources are limited. Data centers are no longer simply collections of bulk commodity resources, but must meet the increasing needs of high performance computing users using carefully selected resources with increasing accuracy, precision and energy efficiency. Understanding the software and hardware needs of science users for computation, data processing and movement, and networking requires deep engagement between providers and users of these facilities. We are further faced with financial constraints in science projects and the corresponding need to meet these challenges by means that can provide substantial gains in general applicability and cost efficiency.

In this talk, I will describe successes, challenges and lessons learned in the TIGRE project in deploying a comprehensive system to try to meet such needs with an extensible system for local, state-wide, regional, national and international cyberinfrastructure projects. the possibility to duplicate these successes in other states and regions will be discussed.
