Title:
Application Benchmarking in the Department of Defense HPC Procurement Process
Abstract:
The Department of Defense (DoD) performs an annual procurement process, called "Technology Insertion" (TI), to purchase new HPC equipment for its four Major Shared Resource Centers and several Distributed Centers. Central to this process is the annual creation and testing of application benchmark suites for the purpose of judging the relative performance of both vendor HPC offerings and existing, production HPC platforms. The process of creating the application benchmarks, their place in the DoD HPC procurement process, and trends in HPC platforms the benchmarks have shown in the past several years, will be discussed. Time permitting, Dr. Cable will also discuss his research in magnetohydrodynamic studies of solar wind phenomena, carried out on HPC platforms purchased under the TI process.
